
Around the time of the new millennium, the Volkswagen Automotive Group (VAG) was putting its fingers in every pie it could find under the direction of the legendary Ferdinand Piëch. He wanted to make the group the world’s authority on everything automotive, something partly achieved by the group taking over a wide range of brands in the late 1990s, such as Bugatti, Bentley, and Lamborghini. It also pushed the boat out in engine design, as a vehicle isn’t truly special unless it has a bespoke engine, right? Well, at least in the eyes of Piech.
