New Name, New Me
Volkswagen‘s initial range of ID electric vehicles hasn’t had the best of starts. As far as sales go, we wouldn’t call it a massive success, and contemporary reviews haven’t been the kindest. VW’s EV push has lagged behind the competition, and the company is pulling all the stops to reverse its fortunes.
The ID.3 was the first mass-market electric vehicle from Volkswagen. It was introduced in late 2019 for the 2020 model year, effectively replacing the e-Golf. It was then facelifted in 2023, but it did little to boost sales. So, it’s back to the drawing board to make people remotely interested in it somehow.

Say Hello to the ID.3 Neo
With that, the ID.3 is getting a reboot of sorts this year. It’s getting a new(ish) name this year, or rather, it’s getting a new suffix in a bid to change its identity. Volkswagen will now call it the ID.3 Neo, and it will get more tech (no surprises there) and enhanced powertrains.
Mind you, it’s not an all-new model. Volkswagen calls it an extensive update, so the platform is pretty much the same as before. However, the new tech and features seen in the ID.3 Neo will also be used in upcoming VW electric models. Think of this then as a preview for what to expect in the ID. Polo, ID. Polo GTI, and ID. Cross.

It Still Looks Familiar
Volkswagen released a couple of sketches to give us an idea of what the ID.3 Neo will look like. That said, don’t expect huge surprises here, as it still looks a lot like the current model. We do see some changes at the front, as it now has a faux grille to make it look more like a Golf. As for the rest of the body, it’s a case of deja vu, although we might see new wheel designs soon.
We can also expect the interior to get a fair bit of upgrades, too. Over the years, VW has added more premium-feeling materials inside the ID.3, but the ID.3 Neo is said to get even more buttons in the cabin as part of the brand’s move to reintegrate these again. We might also see a totally different interface for its infotainment system.

More Features
The company promises a whole slew of new technologies, but hasn’t mentioned all of them yet. It includes enhanced Travel Assist with traffic light detection, as well as an improved one-pedal driving system. The Vehicle to Load function will also be an option for the new EV hatchback.
We will find out more about the car once it makes its world premiere by mid-April. By then, we’ll see if VW made good on its promise of better battery and powertrain options for it. Overall, it’s a much-needed update for the ID.3 as Chinese automakers continue to dominate the EV space.
