What does it take to blaze a new trail in a sport dominated by men—and do it with style, heart, and humor? For Wendy Fisher, the answer has always been skiing, but not just in the traditional sense.
Wendy Fisher’s name may be etched into skiing history books—as an Olympian, a two-time World Extreme Skiing Champion, and a pioneer in big mountain terrain—but her legacy stretches far beyond podiums. In the latest episode of The Ski Moms Podcast, we sit down with Wendy to explore how grief, grit, and a little creative reinvention helped shape a career—and a life—on her own terms.

From Olympian to DJ
Wendy’s story starts on the slopes of Squaw Valley (now Palisades Tahoe), chasing her older brothers and carving out speed from an early age. But her trajectory changed after a devastating family tragedy. She funneled her loss into ski racing, eventually making it to the 1992 Winter Olympics. Still, behind the medals and press came the toll: the pressure of performing not just for herself, but for a memory.
Burnt out by 23, Wendy walked away from racing and hit the road—literally. A solo ski trip brought her to Crested Butte, Colorado, where she entered her first big mountain contest and skied a line no woman had attempted before. The crowd erupted. Wendy had found her spark again—not in chasing time, but in chasing freedom.
What followed was a storied career in extreme skiing, complete with appearances in iconic ski films by Warren Miller and Matchstick Productions. But perhaps most inspiring is how Wendy has continued to evolve: from pro athlete to mom of two boys (both talented skiers), to ski instructor, to DJ (yes, really), to event coordinator. Today, she’s still based in Crested Butte, offering “Ski with an Olympian” experiences through Vail Resorts, spinning sets as DJ Red, and helping guests experience après life at The Beckwith hotel.

Wendy brings to motherhood the same fearless energy she brought to skiing. Her hope? To ski the world with her boys—and to help others find the joy and playfulness that first drew her to the mountain.
