Trying to find “the best” can be daunting, even for those of us who live and breathe online courses. Here’s how I approached this task.
I browsed Class Central’s Catalog and the internet to find a variety of free and paid open courses, some with certificates. I extracted information from course syllabi and reviews, and compiled their ratings, leveraging the Class Central database with its thousands of course ratings and reviews written by our users as well as course provider ratings. Then, I watched some course videos to sample courses I hadn’t already taken.
A nutrition course can cover various topics, from basics through to specific circumstances and life stages. Ultimately, I used a combination of data and my own judgment to make these picks.
Best for Healthy Eating Habits: Building a Healthy Plate (Tufts University)
Building a Healthy Plate comes from Tufts University’s Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, one of the leading nutrition research institutions in the US. Instructor Julia Hilbrands covers dietary patterns (including the Mediterranean diet and plant-based eating), the health properties of fruits, vegetables, grains, and fiber, and the differences between animal and plant protein sources. At around 10 hours, it’s one of the more focused options on this list.
The course ends with a practical meal-building assignment, which grounds the content in real decisions. Seven assignments in total keep the learning active. One limitation worth knowing upfront: no certificate is available on Coursera for this course, which may matter if you’re looking to document your learning.
This is a solid starting point for anyone who wants a research-backed framework for eating well, without committing to a longer program.

The Science of Nutrition and Healthy Eating is the strongest free option on this list. Few free courses go this wide or this deep.

Nutrition Education for the Consumer is a five-course Specialization from the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). Health and Nutrition Life Coach Certification is not a general nutrition course. It’s built for people who want to coach others on health and nutrition, and the curriculum reflects that. Instructors Joeel and Natalie Rivera and Sanda Kruger cover life coaching models (GROW, DISC, Wheel of Life), the psychology of behavioral change (Transtheoretical Model, self-efficacy, growth mindset), human anatomy and physiology, basic nutrition and digestion, and how to develop nutritional and exercise programs for clients.
