Land Rover Gives the Defender a Mid-Life Refresh

Back in 2019, the Land Rover Defender was reinvented – one of the most iconic off-roaders on the planet. Fast forward seven years, and the old bruiser is starting to look a little long in the tooth next to the new kids on the block. But don’t expect a full reboot just yet. After prototype sightings earlier this year, Land Rover is finally giving the Defender a well-deserved facelift: new styling, updated gear, and a few tweaks to make life easier behind the wheel.

The slight redesign is introduced in the all-new Defender Vertex. It’s a new trim that comes with a fresh vibe for the Defender.

Sure, the Vertex is hogging the spotlight, but Land Rover isn’t leaving the rest of the family out in the cold. There are new exterior packs, fresh paint options, tech upgrades, shiny accessories, and even some seat shuffling – so just about every Defender fan gets a little something to brag about.

Defender Vertex Adds a New Look to the Family

Sitting next to the Defender X, the Vertex seems the only one to carry all the design changes. You’ll spot it right away: stretched bumpers in Shadow Atlas Matte, a beefier grille, tweaked fog lights, a Gloss Black spoiler out back, and pops of yellow on the brake calipers and recovery points.

The lower cladding now matches the body color, making the Defender look lower and meaner, while those standard 22-inch Satin Dark Grey wheels make sure nobody mistakes it for your neighbor’s SUV. Paint choices include Fuji White, Santorini Black, Woolstone Green, Borasco Grey, Carpathian Grey, or the head-turning Patagonia White Matte Wrap.

Inside, things get even fancier. You can pick from Windsor Leather, Ultrafabrics, or a new Forged Textile that’s basically high-tech knitwear made from polyester. Depending on which body you go for, Vertex models also include three- or four-zone climate control, air purification, and even a standard household power outlet – because why not?

The Rest of the Defender Range Gets Plenty of Attention

But the Vertex isn’t the only headline here. Land Rover is rolling out more ways to make your Defender truly yours. The new Extended Exterior Pack steals a bunch of the Vertex’s style tricks and hands them over to select X-Dynamic and V8 models. Meanwhile, the Defender Trophy Edition gets a slick Santorini Black makeover but keeps all the expedition gear for those who like their SUVs with a side of adventure.

Elsewhere, you can now order your Defender in Namib Orange, wrap it in a self-healing Gloss Protective Film, or spec the Defender 110 with six seats and captain’s chairs in the second row. The accessory catalog is also bursting at the seams: roof lights, a tailgate storage box, and even more Explorer, Adventure, and Urban packs to play with.

Tech gets a boost too, with a new AI voice assistant that wakes up when you say “Hey Land Rover.” Some markets also get updated mild-hybrid six-cylinder engines. Even the wild Defender OCTA gets a little love: a new exhaust note, fresh Woolstone Green paint, and a few tweaks here and there.

It’s unclear when these updates will reach America, but it won’t be long. While none of these rewrite the Defender playbook, they’re enough to keep Land Rover’s icon feeling fresh for another lap around the sun.
