Hatchbacks and sedans are making a comeback and SUVs may have plateaued. At least, that’s been a common theme in the sales reports from multiple major automakers this year. Mazda is the latest automaker to publish July 2026 sales, and the Japanese brand is no exception as sales of the Mazda 3 hatchback and sedan have substantially increased. On the other hand, every SUV but one in Mazda’s range was hit by declining sales in July.
Mazda Sales Decline Overall

Mazda
Mazda North America sold 39,180 vehicles in July 2026, a year-on-year decrease of 13%. Despite that, this was the automaker’s third-best July sales total ever. Here’s a look at the automaker’s July sales by model.

The Mazda 3 hatchback and sedan have been on sale for close to a decade, yet they saw the largest uptick in sales for the brand in July. This trend mirrors what we’ve seen from Honda, where the Civic and Accord have also experienced a surge in sales recently.

Mazda’s only SUV that managed to increase sales in July was the CX-30. Like the Mazda 3, the CX-30 is one of the brand’s more affordable models and starts at under $27,000. The CX-50 continues to run the newer CX-5 remarkably close, despite the latter recently having entered a new generation.
The standard Mazda CX-90 MHEV achieved its best-ever July sales, even though overall sales of the three-row SUV (including the hybrid) are down.
Future Mazdas That Could Boost Sales

Mazda’s lineup isn’t quite as fresh as some rivals’, but there are a couple of models on the horizon that could significantly increase sales in the near future. A new generation of the CX-30 is expected to arrive in initial markets in 2027 with a hybrid powertrain, something the current version lacks. Still on hybrids, the all-new CX-5 will get a more efficient hybrid powertrain in 2027. Given soaring sales of hybrid rivals in the compact crossover segment, this model can’t come too soon.
We also expect a new generation of the Mazda 3 to arrive at some point, despite the enduring popularity of the current version. Mazda has released a hybrid powertrain for the current 3, but only in Japan for now.
These new models in the sub-$40,000 price category could introduce Mazda’s elegant design language and fun driving dynamics to a new generation of buyers.
