2026.31 Software Update Coming to Older Models
Rivian is keeping its older models updated with its latest and greatest. Right now, the company’s R1 and R2 models have entered a new generation, bringing with it a software experience that’s been designed from the ground up. RivianOS 2 is an AI-defined platform that comes shipped with the Gen 2 R1s and R2s, but Rivian’s first-generation customers can also enjoy the benefits that OS2 brings.
The brand has released a statement saying that it will be giving the Gen 1 Rivian R1s RivianOS 2 as well. Good news for the early adopters because things are about to get more interesting for their cars in the near future.

Gen 1 and Gen 2 Rivian owners can also enjoy OS 2. This also means that improvements will be seen and experienced across the board for all owners, such as continuous feature updates, shared UI enhancements, and “new capabilities tailored to each vehicle’s hardware setup.”
The new update will breathe new life into the Gen 1 R1s. Rivian OS2 will feature “re-imagined UI and Dynamic Controls, which bring more intuitive controls and a customizable and context-aware UI. R1 and R2 owners will also get Unreal 5, while the older Gen 1 R1 vehicles will retain the previous-generation Unreal Engine 4 to keep the system responsive because it is based on older hardware.
Apart from that, OS2 also brings new “Real-Time Route Alerts” that tie in with Google Maps and Waze. This update adds incident reporting based on local authorities as well as police and speed camera presence. Rivian Connect+ subscribers will see the weather app get an update with a richer stream of data, and so too will the Mobile Live Trips feature.

All Rivians are Getting Smarter
At the core of the update is the brand’s Unified Intelligence push, which will see all Rivian models take advantage of “a common AI foundation that connects select vehicle, mobile, and service experiences.” The keywords there are Hybrid Edge Compute and Local AI processing for R2 and Gen 2 R1 models, and Core Smart Features for Gen 1 and Gen 2 R1 models with “expanded cloud-assisted voice capabilities and refreshed driver display hierarchies.”
Update 2026.31 will be served over the air (OTA), which will be an automatic notification for eligible R1 and R2 vehicles. In case OTA isn’t enabled for your Rivian, check with your dealer or the Rivian App to see if you can get the new update yourself.
