Welcome to Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day for September 2026.
Here in my USDA Hardiness Zone 6a garden, we’ve just come out of a fairly long stretch of days with no rain to speak of. But then a few days ago, we got just over a half-inch of rain in the early morning hours, and everyone was happy again.
At least those of use how garden were happy.
Now let’s see what’s blooming as we reach mid-September. First up, above is colchicums. Don’t they look like spring? Together, let us recollect the Sir Francis Bacon quote about perpetual spring, ver perpetuum, in the garden, about how each flower has it’s own spring.
In one of the shaded areas, hardy begonia continues to bloom and is joined by toad lilies.
One knows that the perpetual spring is soon coming to an end once the toad lilies bloom.
But there are still hummingbirds stopping through on their way south, partaking mostly of the salvias I grow in big pots on the patio.
I watch them when I eat lunch, as I sit facing a window that looks out over the patio.
Fall means mums to many people.
Clearly, though, these aren’t mums I bought just last week. These mums are growing in the ground in my garden, and have come back several years in a row. In my humble opinion, these mums are prettier than the potted ones.
Finally, we could not talk about blooms in September without at least one picture of asters.
They are slowly opening now and we’ll peak in a few weeks, just in time for Michaelmas, September 29, giving them their other common name, Michaelmas daisies.
Enough of today’s blooms. As I’ve done this year, I’ll take a walk down memory lane to look at past Septembers as I wrap up this meme.
2007 – Back in the days when I used to list all blooms. No, I don’t have that false dragon head anymore, thank goodness.
2008 – Those hostas used to bloom later than they do today.
2009 – Kind of about the same as this year.
2010 – Memories of plants I no longer have!
2011 – Featuring my beloved Short’s goldenrod, plus flowers I no longer have
2012 – About the same, though with plants I’ve gotten rid of. This was after a big drought so pleased to have any blooms at all.
2013 – Many of the same blooms as the previous years.
2014 – I featured several varieties of Asters. Today I think I have just one type.
2015 – Colchicums and a visit to Elizabeth Lawrence’s garden!
2016 – Much the same except the asters weren’t as far along.
2017 – Mostly the same, though I don’t have that Boltonia anymore.
2018 – Oh, I had a ripe fig. I need to go look at my figs!
2019 – The garden fairies got into this post.
2020 – A pretty good year for late summer/early fall bloom!
2021 – I featured some violas. Of course I did.
2022 – Looks about like today, except I don’t have that hardy hibiscus anymore.
2023 – Colchicums and other flowers I still grow today.
2024 – This could be this year’s garden.
2025 – I had also just purchased pansies!
