I’ve lived in California my entire life. Here are 5 of my favorite places to visit during the fall months.

Located in the Cuyamaca Mountains, Julian is a tiny town looks and feels like it’s straight out of a Hallmark film. The downtown area is filled with charming local shops restaurants.

For a true fall activity, I recommend grabbing an apple pie at Julian Pie Company, which has been family-run since 1986.

If you’re hungry, try Miner’s Diner for a classic American breakfast and Julian Beer Co. for a beverage and barbecue.

There’s also plenty of nature to explore nearby. For example, the Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve spans 2,900 acres of various hiking trails and panoramic views.

Although Napa typically gets more attention, I prefer Sonoma’s laid-back atmosphere and small-town feel.

Located in the heart of California’s wine country, Sonoma has become my favorite go-to weekend escape since moving to the Bay Area.

The historic Sonoma Plaza is surrounded by tasting rooms, restaurants, boutiques, and cafés, making it easy to wander without much of an itinerary.

I recommend dining at the El Dorado Kitchen for a luxurious, seasonally-inspired menu. Then, walk over to the Capo Isetta tasting room for a glass of wine from a local, family-owned vineyard.

Although there are hundreds of wineries throughout the Sonoma County region, I especially love the unique food-and-wine-pairing experiences offered at St. Francis Winery and Vineyards.

Also located in Sonoma County, Healdsburg embodies the term “quiet luxury.”

Its charming downtown includes a historic plaza lined with upscale boutiques, tasting rooms, art galleries, and restaurants, while the surrounding countryside is dotted with vineyards.

Fall is an ideal time to visit, as the vineyards turn golden and the weather is still warm enough to enjoy a leisurely afternoon in town.

One of my favorite locations in Healdsburg is The Madrona, an expansive estate from 1881 that’s been refurbished into a luxury hotel. The on-site restaurant has been awarded two Michelin Keys, so it’s worth making a reservation and strolling the property even if you don’t stay overnight.

During the summer months, it can sometimes get too hot to comfortably spend time outside in parts of Southern California. That’s why I love visiting Murrieta for an autumn outing.

Located between San Diego and Los Angeles, the area is home to natural hot springs, making it the perfect place to relax when temperatures start to drop. For example, Murrieta Hot Springs Resort has more than 40 natural geothermal mineral pools and baths.

Although it’s a hotel, guests can also opt for a day pass to use the various amenities. I love spending a few hours moving between the different pools, lounging outside, and indulging in spa treatments.

Aside from spending time at the resort, the city of Murrieta also offers access to outdoor activities like hiking, horseback riding, golf, and more.

I accidentally came across June Lake on road trip, but it instantly became a place I want to revisit.

The tiny town sits beside a lake surrounded by mountain scenery, creating a peaceful and slow-paced atmosphere. Visitors can kayak, fish, or camp around the lake to fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty.

When you’re not out exploring, June Lake Brewing is a popular spot to hang out, sip on local beers, and grab a bite from the on-site food trucks.
