Honda is Brewing a New Model
If there’s one thing about Honda, it knows how to stick to tried-and-tested nameplates. It doesn’t try to replace the name with a new one every once in a while, as it knows the value of a strong brand. When it does come up with a new monicker, it’s for a different kind of car altogether.
That brings us neatly to the Avancier. If you’re unfamiliar with it, it’s totally understandable. It was once Honda’s midsize station wagon based on the Accord. If we’re being specific, it’s the Japanese-market sixth-gen Accord Wagon that served as the basis of the Avancier, and was a JDM-only model. It ran from 1999 to 2003, and then reused in China as a flagship crossover there.

An Outback Fighter?
A few months ago, a crossover type vehicle from Honda was spied driving around Japan. At the time, it was suspected that it would carry the name Avancier, but nothing was confirmed at the time. Now, we can safely say that it will be, indeed, called as such. That’s following the teaser Honda released earlier today across its Asian social media platforms.
Based on the spy shots we saw prior, it looks more like a wagon with a couple of extra inches of ride height. This leads us to believe that the Avancier has the potential to be a Subaru Outback competitor. Note that the Subaru has yet to make its Japanese premiere, so it’s possible that Honda is ready to welcome current Outback owners into its showrooms should they not be fans of the latest version.
It also appears to have Honda’s new design language with slim lights at the front and rear. The teaser also shows a rakish tailgate, some chrome trim, and really not much else. Still, it looks like this is the model that will preview the brand’s design language in the coming years.

The Rumored Accord SUV
A recent report from Japan also brought up the prospect of a new ‘Accord-type SUV.’ It backs up other stories saying an Accord Crossover may appear by mid-2029 alongside the next-gen Accord sedan.
It was also mentioned that the so-called Accord SUV will feature the new Honda Hybrid system, and the brand just confirmed that the Avancier will be powered by it. There was also mention of a new kind of all-wheel drive system for midsize models, using an e-AWD system instead of a mechanical driveshaft. It’s starting to look more and more like the Avancier is the vehicle that’s being described.

Should that be the case, there might actually be a chance of it coming to America. But given that the Avancier name is pretty much unknown outside of Japan and China, this may appear stateside with an Accord prefix for the sake of familiarity. We’ll find out more down the line, and we’ll be keeping tabs on this model as Honda hasn’t even announced its launch date yet.
