Arguably, up until the mid-1980s, most American drivers preferred to get around in large, V8-powered sedans. After all, these land yachts were typically very comfortable, and many models were supremely reliable thanks to their simple designs and ease of maintenance, especially if you knew your way around a wrench. Once the family SUV came about in the early 1990s and the minivan became popular in the 1980s, the large American sedan began to fall out of favor. Not to mention, they were expensive to fuel.
