American Express is expanding its airport lounge footprint again, this time with a significant first for its Centurion Lounge network.
The company is opening a new Centurion Lounge at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol on September 17, marking the first lounge in continental Europe to carry the Centurion Lounge name. The nearly 6,000-square-foot space will become the 33rd location in the network.
What travelers can expect inside the new Amsterdam Centurion Lounge
The opening gives eligible American Express cardholders another lounge option at one of Europe’s busiest international hubs, while also pushing the airport lounge battle among credit card companies deeper into Europe.
Located between Concourses E and F, the new lounge will be open daily from 6 a.m. until 9:30 p.m.
Its design takes inspiration from Amsterdam and the Netherlands, using blues, greens, and earth tones intended to evoke the country’s landscape and Amsterdam’s famous canals. Architectural details, including black quartzite, brass trim, and wood accents, are paired with floor-to-ceiling windows.
In the space are displayed works from Mieke Jonker, Reinder Schmidt, Geesien Postema, and Thirza Schaap, all Dutch artists. One piece by Jonker depicts the American Express bulldog alongside Dutch imagery including Delft Blue plates and floral designs.
Food and drinks will also have a distinctly local focus. American Express says the buffet will offer seasonal dishes inspired by Dutch and other regional European flavors. The bar will serve beer and cocktails incorporating both local and global influences.
There’s also a Blue Roast Coffee Bar with locally sourced coffee and a barista-led program, a nod to Amsterdam’s coffee culture.
For travelers looking to work or simply escape the terminal, the lounge has armchairs, café tables, high-top seating, booths, group seating, and quiet workspaces. Other amenities include private restrooms, a phone room, complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi and plenty of power and USB outlets.
“Schiphol is a major travel hub for our Card Members in the Netherlands and around the world. That made Schiphol a natural place to bring the Centurion Lounge experience,” Audrey Hendley, president of American Express Travel, said in a statement.
American Express is rapidly expanding its lounge network
The Amsterdam opening comes as airport lounges become an increasingly important battleground for premium travel credit cards.
American Express says its broader Global Lounge Collection now gives its eligible cardholders access to more than 1,550 lounges worldwide. That includes Centurion Lounges as well as participating Priority Pass lounges, Plaza Premium Lounges, Escape Lounges, select Lufthansa lounges and, for qualifying cardholders flying Delta, Delta Sky Clubs.
And Amsterdam isn’t the end of the company’s expansion.
American Express has additional Centurion Lounge locations planned for Newark Liberty International Airport and Boston Logan International Airport. It is also preparing to open Sidecar by The Centurion Lounge at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, a new lounge concept designed as another option for eligible cardholders.
That expansion comes as competitors, including Chase Sapphire and Capital One, continue building their own branded airport lounge networks.
Why Amsterdam is a big addition
Schiphol is a particularly valuable location for that strategy.
The airport handled 68.8 million passengers in 2025 and offered nonstop connections to 301 destinations, including 125 intercontinental destinations. It is the largest airport in the Netherlands and one of Europe’s major international hubs.
A Centurion Lounge presence at Schiphol allows American Express to place its branded lounge in front of many international travelers rather than relying solely on partner lounges in the region.
“As the first global credit card company to operate a lounge at AMS, we look forward to welcoming Card Members in a premium space designed to reflect the character of Amsterdam,” Hendley said.
