Those of you old enough to remember will recall the state of American roads some 50 years ago or earlier. Virtually all family cars on the pavement were large sedans powered by nothing other than a naturally-aspirated V8 engine. A car like that was simply how you ferried your loved ones about in this country, and while there were straight-six-equipped models and compacts around, too, the V8 sedan was, basically, king of the road.
