Looking for somewhere warm to spend New Year’s Eve? While New York City might be the first place that comes to mind for ringing in the new year, there are plenty of reasons to trade the crowds and cold weather for a tropical island instead.
Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a lively beach party, or somewhere a little more laid-back to start the new year, these tropical destinations offer something for everyone.
I’ve rounded up 10 of the best places to spend New Year’s Eve, along with hotel recommendations to help you start planning your trip. Just keep in mind that the holidays are one of the busiest travel periods of the year, so it’s worth booking flights and accommodations well in advance.
Where to Spend New Year’s Eve in the Tropics
Big Island, Hawaii
Hawaii is one of the best places to spend New Years because it simultaneously feels like traveling to a foreign country while also feeling like you’re still in the U.S. (because you are).
The gold standard for luxury accommodations on the Big Island is the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, known for its beautiful setting, exceptional service and impressive amenities. For something a little more moderately priced, OUTRIGGER Kona Resort & Spa is another great option. The recently renovated resort sits above Keauhou Bay and is especially well situated for manta ray snorkeling.

St. Lucia
Those looking for a romantic getaway for New Year’s Eve should consider the beautiful island of St. Lucia.
Jade Mountain Resort is one of the most unique luxury resorts in the Caribbean, with open-air suites and private infinity pools overlooking the Pitons. On the more affordable side, Ti Kaye Resort & Spa is a lovely adults-only option overlooking the secluded Anse Cochon beach. Ti Kaye is one of my all-time favorite resorts in the world!

Bonaire
Nestled off the coast of Venezuela, Bonaire is one of the best islands in the Caribbean for a more laid-back New Year’s Eve vacation. It’s especially popular with divers thanks to its protected marine park and easy access to some incredible shore diving.
The Bellafonte Luxury Oceanfront Hotel is a great option for those looking for a more intimate stay. The boutique property has spacious oceanfront suites, private balconies and its own pier, making it a nice home base for exploring the island.

Molokai, Hawaii
If you’re looking for somewhere quiet to ring in the new year, Molokai is about as far from a typical Hawaiian resort vacation as you can get. Known for its rural atmosphere, rich Hawaiian culture and dramatic coastline, this is an island for travelers who want to slow down and experience a different side of Hawaii.
Hotel Molokai is a great place to stay, with Polynesian-style bungalows, an oceanfront pool and an onsite restaurant. Just don’t expect the big resort scene or nightlife you’ll find on some of the other Hawaiian islands.

Jamaica
Jamaica is a fun option for travelers who want a mix of beautiful beaches, great food and a lively island atmosphere. New Year’s Eve is a popular time to visit, so I’d recommend booking your accommodations well ahead of time.
Sandals Royal Plantation in Ocho Rios is an adults-only luxury resort with butler service and beachfront dining. For something a little more intimate, The Caves in Negril has unique cliffside cottages and beautiful ocean views.

Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a great option for anyone who wants more than just a beach vacation. You can spend your days exploring rainforests, visiting waterfalls, spotting wildlife or simply enjoying the beaches along the Pacific coast.
Late December also marks the beginning of the dry season on much of the Pacific side of the country, making it a popular time to visit.
Luxury travelers will want to check out the Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo. Another beautiful option is Hotel Punta Islita, Autograph Collection, which offers a more secluded setting surrounded by Costa Rica’s natural beauty.
Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is a great option for a tropical New Year’s Eve, especially if you want a combination of beautiful beaches, good food and a lively atmosphere. Since it’s a U.S. territory, American travelers also have the convenience of not needing a passport to visit.
San Juan is where you’ll find the most action, with restaurants, live music and celebrations throughout the city. Old San Juan is especially fun to explore, with its colorful buildings, historic streets and waterfront views. If you’d rather spend your trip relaxing on the beach, you can also venture outside the city to find quieter coastal areas.
For accommodations, I’d look at Condado Vanderbilt Hotel for a luxury stay in San Juan or La Concha Resort for something with a livelier atmosphere. Both put you close to the restaurants and nightlife, making it easy to enjoy the New Year’s Eve celebrations without having to travel far.

The Bahamas
The Bahamas is a great choice if you want to spend your days on white-sand beaches and your evenings celebrating. There are plenty of islands to choose from, depending on whether you’re looking for a lively New Year’s Eve or something a little more secluded.
The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort, Bahamas, goes all out for the holidays, with its New Year’s Eve celebrations featuring traditional Junkanoo festivities and fireworks. It’s a fun option if you’re looking for a luxury beach getaway with a little more happening on New Year’s Eve.
For a more laid-back stay, Bahama Beach Club in Treasure Cay offers spacious beachfront condominiums and easy access to the beautiful beaches of the Abacos.

Visiting the Galapagos Islands is a memorable experience any time of year, so why not make it your New Year’s Eve trip? December marks the beginning of the warmer season, with warmer ocean temperatures and plenty of opportunities to see the islands’ incredible wildlife.

For a quieter luxury getaway, Zoetry Agua Punta Cana is a lovely option. The all-suite resort sits along Uvero Alto Beach and offers a more intimate atmosphere than some of the larger resorts in Punta Cana. Another option is the JW Marriott Hotel Santo Domingo, which is a good choice if you’d rather spend your trip exploring the city and enjoying its restaurants and nightlife.

Tips for Planning a Tropical New Year’s Eve Vacation
New Year’s Eve is one of the busiest times of year to travel, especially to warm-weather destinations. Here are a few things I’d keep in mind before booking your trip.
- Book early: Flights, beachfront rooms and popular resorts can sell out well ahead of the holidays. If you have your heart set on a particular hotel, don’t wait until December to book.
- Check the resort’s New Year’s Eve plans: Some hotels organize special dinners, parties and fireworks, while others have a much quieter atmosphere. If celebrating at the resort is important to you, check what’s included before booking.
- Expect higher prices: Christmas and New Year’s are peak travel dates in many tropical destinations. Don’t assume you’ll find the same rates you’d see in October or May.
- Check the weather for your specific destination: Not every tropical island has the same weather patterns in December. Some destinations have a rainy season that extends into December or January.
- Leave room for flight delays: Holiday travel can be hectic, so I like to give myself a little extra time when planning connections, especially when traveling to smaller islands with limited flight schedules.
Frequently Asked Questions About Spending New Year’s Eve in the Tropics
It depends on what kind of celebration you’re looking for. The Bahamas is a great choice for travelers who want beach parties, fireworks and a festive atmosphere. St. Lucia is a beautiful option for a romantic getaway, while Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands are better suited to travelers who want to spend their holiday exploring nature and enjoying outdoor adventures.
If you’d rather avoid big parties and crowded resorts, consider Molokai, Bonaire or the Galapagos Islands. These destinations offer beautiful scenery and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors without the same nightlife scene you’ll find in some of the larger Caribbean destinations.
Yes! December is one of the most popular months to visit the Caribbean thanks to warm temperatures and generally lower rainfall across much of the region. It’s also peak travel season, so expect higher hotel prices and more visitors around Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
I’d recommend booking flights and accommodations as early as possible. Christmas and New Year’s are some of the busiest travel weeks of the year, and the most popular resorts and room categories can sell out months in advance.
Hawaii, Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands are all great alternatives. Hawaii is a good choice if you want to stay within the United States, while Costa Rica and the Galapagos offer a combination of warm weather, wildlife and outdoor adventures.
