If you’ve been a regular trawler of BMW forums and discussion groups, you may have come across the occasional report of a BMW or two that suffered drivetrain faults due to driveshaft and rear-axle differential failures. The problem has not been widespread, but it has happened enough that BMW was forced to investigate, and it went above and beyond to understand why these rare failures are happening and what must be done to fix them. The result is a new recall issued through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, affecting certain BMW 5 Series, 7 Series, and 8 Series models, with model years ranging from 2021 to 2026. Weirdly, the solution is either a full replacement of the affected components… or glue. You read that right.
BMW Recalls Straight-Six Turbo And V8 Twin-Turbo Models

The NHTSA recall report names 27,7820 potentially involved vehicles across six specific models, all of which feature the B58 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine but one: the discontinued M550i (R.I.P. to one of the greats), which has the N63 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8. Below are the affected BMW variants and their model years, but don’t panic if you see your car here, as only 0.2 percent of the recalled vehicles are estimated to have the defect:
- 2021-2023 BMW 540i, 540i xDrive, and M550i (18,150 vehicles potentially involved)
- 2024-2026 BMW 750e xDrive PHEV (2,198 vehicles potentially involved)
- 2022-2026 BMW 840i and 840i xDrive (7,372 vehicles potentially involved)
So what exactly is the problem? BMW says that over time, the coupling between the driveshaft and the rear differential may be subject to excessive wear, and in some cases, this could eventually lead to a loss of power to the rear wheels or a rollaway if the vehicle’s parking brake is not activated. BMW first found out about the problem in December 2024, noticing increasing reports of drivetrain failure in the field. Following an engineering investigation being approved, in Q1 of 2025, BMW began examining high-mileage vehicle components through a parts return program. At the time, the field incidents had only occurred on high-mileage vehicles, but BMW prides itself on engineering high-power vehicles and knows that lessons learned examining these older cars can be carried over to more powerful vehicles in the future, as well as existing cars under recall that may show signs of failure with relatively low mileage but more demanding use cases. Thus, it kept digging.
BMW’s Thorough Examination And Shockingly Simple Solution

Using computer simulations and production data across various assembly plants involved with the vehicles, BMW looked for inconsistencies and anomalies. In case the problem lay not with the factory but with the design, BMW also performed bench tests to reproduce the damage seen in field-returned parts, and metallurgical testing was even carried out to assess the materials in these faulty components. After quality checks and parts inspections were performed to check supplier build quality, BMW continued looking, going so far as to carry out comparisons against other vehicle types, driveshaft designs, and build configurations. BMW even calculated bending angles for various axle configurations and propeller shaft mounting positions, and that still doesn’t cover the full scope of its analysis. BMW doesn’t reveal what it found or how it addressed the defect, but the protocol for recalled vehicles suggests it was simply a minor alignment issue: dealers will inspect the connection between the driveshaft and the rear-axle diff, “and either adhesive will be applied or, if necessary, the driveshaft and rear-axle differential will be replaced.”
The voluntary recall will be performed sometime after October 2 (those whose cars are fixed before then can claim from BMW, too), but dealers are already being prepared. Obviously, whether you get all-new parts or just glue depends on how seriously affected your car is, but if it were me, I’d feel like I’m getting a raw deal if I looked after the drivetrain so well that all I got to keep it that way is glue.
