When Coursera was founded in 2012, the goal was simple: make world-class learning accessible to anyone, anywhere. That vision helped usher in the first era of online learning, expanding access from traditional classrooms to learners around the world.
Today, we’re entering a new era.
I’m excited to share that Coursera is making a $100 million strategic investment in LearnVector Inc., a newly formed AI-native learning company founded and led by Andrew Ng — one of the world’s most influential figures in AI, co-founder of Coursera, and someone who has dedicated his career to making education more accessible and using AI to benefit humanity.
For decades, education has largely been built around a one-to-many model: one instructor, one curriculum, one path delivered to many learners. That model dramatically expanded access to learning. But AI gives us the opportunity to reinvent learning from the ground up. LearnVector was founded to help transform and shape this future.
LearnVector’s mission is to accelerate human development by putting AI agents to work for learners. Building on Andrew’s pioneering work in agentic AI, LearnVector is focused on creating fundamentally new learning experiences. Rather than a search box or chatbot that answers questions and moves on, it’ll provide a one-on-one learning experience that adapts to how you learn, practices with you, stays with you until you’ve mastered the material, and helps demonstrate what you’ve learned in meaningful ways.
For Coursera, this investment represents an important step in our next chapter of innovation and growth.
Over the past several years, we’ve been leveraging AI across our platform to make learning more personalized, adaptive, effective, and measurable. Across Coursera and Udemy, we’ve introduced several AI-powered innovations for learners, instructors, and organizations — from personalized guidance and Course Builder on Coursera to AI Assistant and AI-powered learning paths on Udemy. That work has created a strong foundation, but we believe the opportunity ahead is far greater than improving today’s learning experience.Â
We believe that LearnVector will be a force-multiplier for that ambition.
Building on the broader reach we’ve gained through Udemy, this investment reflects our conviction that AI can help grow the market itself by making learning more continuous, more personal, and more embedded in people’s daily lives. In other words, we’re focused on creating a much bigger opportunity for learning overall.
As LearnVector develops new AI-native learning experiences, we’re exploring powerful ways to combine those advances with Coursera’s unique strengths: trusted content, insights from more than 300 million learners, and one of the world’s largest ecosystems of university and industry partners.Â
This isn’t about replacing the human elements of learning — it’s about enhancing them.
The best learning experiences will always be built on trusted expertise, rigorous content, thoughtful pedagogy, and clear outcomes. Our university and industry partners, along with our instructors, remain central to our mission. AI gives us the opportunity to make their expertise more accessible, more interactive, and more relevant to each learner’s goals than ever before.
I’m grateful to Andrew for continuing to push the boundaries of what’s possible, and I’m energized by what this investment can make possible for Coursera, our partners, and learners around the world. We believe we’re only at the beginning of what AI-native learning can become, and we’re excited to help shape that future.
