Those who have a family but don’t want to leave a fun driving experience in the rearview have access to the Ford Explorer ST, and for the 2027 model year, the Blue Oval has taken inspiration from the Explorer ST’s large aftermarket community by launching an optional Sinister Package. The updates include a set of 21-inch gloss black aluminum wheels dressed in 275/45R21 all-season subber, gloss black borders for the ST badges (chrome is standard), and amber daytime running lights as opposed to the white DRLs seen on other Explorer models. The transformation is subtle but effective, and it’s not too pricy, adding just $1,695 to the base MSRP (which has yet to be confirmed for 2027). Another key detail is that the package can be added to any color Explorer ST; you don’t have to order black.
Ford ST Experience Is Back to Get the Most Out of the Sporty Explorer
The Sinister Package doesn’t affect performance, with the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 still producing 385 horsepower (up to 400 hp in some states with less stringent emissions controls) and 415 lb-ft of torque. This goes to a 10-speed automatic delivering power to the rear wheels as standard, with AWD optional, enabling 0-60 mph in around five seconds. The sport-tuned suspension is also left unchanged, but the Explorer ST Experience has returned to help owners get the most out of their SUVs. This means that anyone who buys a new 2026 or 2027 Explorer ST gets an invitation to a one-day professional driving school. The program launches in the fall and will travel across the U.S., with more details to follow, but owners won’t have to put their own SUVs through their paces, instead learning driving skills in a Ford-supplied Explorer ST.
More Updates Coming to the 2027 Ford Explorer Range
While we await further information on the 2027 Explorer, an order guide leaked earlier this year revealed that the Sinister Package for the ST will be joined by the 3.0L Ultimate Package for the Platinum trim, a Sun and Sound Package for the off-road-biased Tremor, and a Ford Security Package. The Ultimate package will swap the standard 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder turbo engine with the ST’s 3.0-liter V6, add the Lux Leather Package with Platinum badging for the front seats, special leather, quad chrome exhaust tips, and 21-inch machined aluminum wheels. The Sun and Sound Package, meanwhile, adds a Bang & Olufsen audio upgrade, multicontour seats, and the Panoramic Vista Roof with a power sunshade. Finally, the Ford Security Package includes theft alerts, stolen vehicle services, and a mode that prevents the vehicle from being started. Expect more information, including pricing, to follow in the coming weeks.
