Check your Halloween candy—because here’s a story that’s spooky for all the wrong reasons.
Crystal Temptations is recalling its Halloween Chocolatey Eyeballs because the candy contains undeclared milk allergens, according to a safety alert from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
People who have an allergy, or severe sensitivity to milk, run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products. No illnesses have been reported as of September 1, according to the FDA notice.
The recalled product, sold under the New Jersey-based brand, was distributed in Arizona, Texas, Virginia, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Indiana, Nevada, California, New Jersey, Connecticut, Ohio, and Wyoming, at Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Homegoods, and Sierra Trading Post.
The recall was initiated after a TJX analyst—whose job it is to monitor inventory, store distribution, and corporate data—discovered that the chocolatey eyeballs contained whey (a milk product), and found the candy was distributed in packaging that lacked the proper milk labeling. This initiated an investigation that found there was “a temporary breakdown in the company’s production and packaging processes.”
