Lamborghini’s 15-Car Fenomeno Roadster Previews Its Wild Future

Automotive design is tricky but essential; in a way, those responsible for design have a thankless job: nobody is ever satisfied with the way a car looks, and opinions can vary. Lamborghini has always understood that design is part of its appeal, and over the years has created cars that are distinctly Lamborghini.

One of the most recent models to debut is the Fenomeno Roadster, a special, limited-run car that showcases the brand’s best in capabilities and design. The latter takes center stage as the lead designer has just gone on the record to explain his thinking.

The Future

Lamborghini just posted a video on its YouTube page hosted by Lamborghini Design Director Mitja Borkert. Borket first explains that the Fenomeno was primarily designed to celebrate 20 years of Lamborghini’s in-house design firm, Centro Stile. He also points out that design is a crucial element of the whole product, and the DNA is what makes the design stand out.

In the case of the Fenonmeno Roadster, Borket says that the design DNA begins from the logo, and from there the lines accelerate outwards. Its silhouette is sketched in one line, a Lamborghini staple that can be traced all the way back to the Countach, the brand’s first radically designed car. Borket also stressed that the overall design is meant to transcend and celebrate shape, and it gives us a unique glimpse into what future cars will look like.

The front of the Fenomeno Roadster is Y-shaped, inspired by the horns of a fighting bull. On the side is a very cool design feature: the windows follow the body’s form, creating an L-shaped look that complements the sculpted lines.

Inside, the interior philosophy is to make the driver feel like a pilot, emphasized by a slim dashboard and a driver-centric layout. Borket says his favorite view is the rear, which remains the most striking part of the car; the taillights carry on the Y-shaped motif, with exhausts mounted in the upper center of the rear.

While the Fenomeno Roadster may not be the most beautiful Lamborghini ever, it certainly is one of the most striking. Only a very select few will be able to call one their own; in fact, the official production number is 15 cars. Not only will they be able to look at it, but driving it will be an occasion, powered by a V12 hybrid making over 1,000 hp.
