Many of us weren’t around, or at least not old enough yet to have experienced it fully, when the Ford Mustang first hit the market midway through the 1964 model year. Back then, a few US-based automakers were keen to take advantage of the then-burgeoning small car market. Following the 1950s – particularly the latter half of the decade – Americans were slowly beginning to leave the large land yacht-type cars behind, and pursuing smaller, sportier models for daily use.
