Automakers are capitalizing on a rapidly emerging market segment; more and more people are willing to take their cars out to the wilderness to explore and relax in the great outdoors. Some refer to this lifestyle as overlanding, and it’s an activity that has seen its popularity increase to the point that some brands are looking at introducing specialized cars for it.
Mini went on record just a few months ago that they are going into the overlanding segment with the introduction of a new variant of the Countryman. It seems we’re close to its official debut after Mini announced that it’s going rallying with a new off-road variant.

Adventure Oriented
The British automaker just announced that it will be participating for the first time in the 2026 Rebelle Rally, which is the longest competitive off-road navigation rally in the United States. Another interesting fact about the Rebelle Rally is that the field consists entirely of women drivers and navigators. The race itself spans 1,500 miles of some of the most demanding terrain in the U.S.
Mini will be running with a brand enthusiast and experienced rallyist, Felicia Killman, and her navigator, Erika Ferrer. The duo will be driving an all-new adventure-oriented model; interestingly, Mini doesn’t say what model or variant the competition car is based on or will be. Instead, the only clues offered by the automaker are that it is designed “for those eager to venture beyond the pavement and confidently follow wherever the journey may lead.” More details are set to be announced sometime this fall.

Extreme Countryman?
While Mini has a lot of models and variants that can be used as the base for this overlanding spec, it makes the most sense that the Countryman is the preferred platform since it’s the “SUV” of the lineup. We can take clues from another announcement that the brand made alongside the Rebelle Rally participation, where they said a new “specially engineered” Countryman is being tested in the Rocky Mountains.
Furthermore, the photos of the car to be used for the Rebelle Rally and the Rocky Mountain testing are almost exactly identical. Jean-Philippe Parain, Head of Mini, says, “We are incredibly excited to be just one step away from introducing this new, rugged addition to the Mini Countryman family.” This all but confirms that the new Countryman variant is upon us and is undergoing not just in-brand testing, but also through the crucible of motorsport.
