Subaru often marches to the beat of a different drum, and the Japanese manufacturer became famous for sticking with four-wheel drive when it wasn’t really fashionable, as well as squeezing a quirky, horizontally opposed boxer engine under the hood of its cars. Many US buyers became ardent supporters of the company’s approach and so were more than a little sad when Subaru, in 2019, did away with its flat-six engine option in mainstream sedan form.
