In the United States, diesel-powered passenger cars never caught on. We haven’t had the best experiences with them, as memories of Oldsmobile’s ill-fated diesel V8 and Volkswagen’s Dieselgate scandal both pop into our heads whenever we think of the topic. The diesel engine is largely relegated to heavy-duty use in vehicles like pickup trucks, agricultural equipment, earth-moving equipment, and semi-trucks.
