Most of the mainstream engines available have gone through decades of predictable, steady evolution. The inline-four is the world’s mule, while its turbocharged version has all but replaced the naturally-aspirated inline-six and V6. The turbocharged inline-six has become the default for anything bigger than a Toyota Camry, while the V8, which was once a trusted workhorse, has become the new golden standard for performance and luxury cars.
