The Mercedes-AMG M156 V8 engine was the first-ever powerplant designed solely by AMG, rather than adapting an existing Mercedes engine with upgraded performance parts. The 6.2-liter eight-cylinder mill went on to power an entire era of AMG models wearing the ‘63’ badge, and once shared headline space with the last of the great naturally-aspirated V8s from various rivals, including the Audi RS5’s 4.2 FSI, the BMW M3’s S65, and the Lexus IS F’s 5.0‑liter 2UR‑GSE.
