Ram Heavy Duty Gets Updates for 2027
As Chevrolet prepares to roll out the redesigned Silverado later this year, Ram is just about ready to stock up on its 2027 heavy-duty models. The updated 2500s will be in showrooms in August, so by the time you’re reading this, perhaps a few have trickled into dealers.
It’s not a major facelift by any means, but the changes made include a new powertrain option for a specific trim, along with increased capability, upgrade packages, enhanced options, and more.

The Power Wagon gets Cummins Power
Announced earlier this year, the Ram 2500 Power Wagon was set to get the Cummins turbodiesel. Ram has made it official, and one can get it with that engine starting next month. Mind you, it’s already available in other trims, but it’s the first time the Power Wagon gets it.
So, what does it pack? The Cummins HO Turbo Diesel is a 6.7-liter straight-six that punches out 430 hp and 1,075 lb-ft of torque. That makes it more powerful than the gas-fed 6.4-liter Hemi V8, especially in the torque department. For comparison, the Hemi puts out 405 hp and 429 lb-ft. It’s still gutsy for its purpose, but it’s nowhere close to the diesel’s pulling power.
There is, however, a caveat when this engine is chosen, though. As it requires more cooling, the diesel-powered 2500 Power Wagon cannot be specified with a winch, something that’s possible with the V8. Another reason Ram didn’t make it an option is because of weight, as the diesel is a fair bit heavier than the gas engine. Surely, though, the aftermarket will eventually find a way around it.

More Capability
For select 3500 4×4 models with a single rear wheel, Ram tweaked the chassis to increase its payload rating. Regular cab 8-foot box and crew cab 6’4″ beds equipped with the V8 now have a maximum GVWR of 11,440 lbs, boosting payload by 400 lbs versus the 2026 models with the same configurations.
If that’s not enough, there’s the new Payload Upgrade Package for select 2500 models with V8 engines. For an additional $835, it inherits the 3500’s fully boxed rear frame and leaf springs, plus a limited-slip differential at the back. Opting for this package increases GVWR from 10,000 lbs to 11,040 lbs, along with a payload of 4,580 lbs. This can be added to the Tradesman, Big Horn/Lone Star, Laramie, Limited, and Limited Longhorn.
Pricing has yet to be announced for the 2027 models, but we could expect a small price bump. Oh, and the cops now have the option of having a pursuit-rated version of the 2500 dubbed the 2500 ERV, so there’s a heavy-duty Ram for just about everyone.
