By the late 1980s, Subaru had carved out a nice little niche for itself, selling mostly all-wheel drive, practical sedans, wagons, and economy cars. Emboldened by the progress, the company’s decision makers decided that they would develop something rather different in the shape of a high-end and head-turning grand touring model. The SVX, which stands for Subaru Vehicle X, was also sold as the Alcyone in Japan. Regardless of the name, Subaru clearly wanted to shoulder its way into the premium GT segment at the expense of other, more established rivals. The result was a flagship GT with all-wheel drive, a big new engine, and styling that would certainly be a decade ahead of its time, but would it sell?
