Thinking Outside The Q
Audi CEO Gernot Döllner has previously floated the idea of developing a true body-on-frame SUV, but whether the German marque will actually build one remains an open question. Still, that has not stopped people from imagining what a Mercedes-Benz G-Class fighter wearing the four rings could look like.
Russia’s Kolesa has offered its take with a rendering of a rugged, off-road-ready Audi SUV. With no official design details available, the publication looked to the Concept C and the production-bound Nuvolari supercar, both of which reflect Audi’s latest design direction. Their minimalist, technical approach helps explain why the render has a straightforward, boxy appearance reminiscent of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.
Nuvolari Styling Hits The Trail
The front fascia looks almost directly lifted from the Nuvolari, although the SUV adds air intakes on either side. Complementing the boxy shape are large trapezoidal wheel arches capable of accommodating chunky, high-profile off-road tires. Even the taillights appear heavily inspired by the Nuvolari, but they are integrated into a full-width black trim panel similar to the one on the Q8.
Although no interior renderings were shared, Kolesa speculated that Scout Motors’ body-on-frame platform could underpin the SUV. The architecture is designed for serious off-road use and can accommodate both fully electric and range-extended electric powertrains. One concern, however, is that such a model could overlap with Scout’s own vehicles. It was likely connected because both brands are under the Volkswagen Group.
America Could Make It Happen
As for why a true Audi off-roader is even being discussed, rugged SUVs and pickups such as the Ford F-150 command strong interest in the U.S. Döllner has noted that the company is “specifically listening to the U.S. market in these directions.” So, if enough buyers show interest, such an unprecedented production model could happen – a somewhat ironic prospect for a brand long known for its Quattro all-wheel-drive system.
What is confirmed is that Audi will fully reveal its new flagship SUV, the Q9, later this month, with the U.S. set to be its debut market. The automaker’s current SUV lineup consists entirely of unibody models, better known as crossovers, including the Q3, Q5, and Q7.
But with rumors suggesting BMW is developing its own Mercedes-Benz G-Class rival, Audi may feel pressure to follow suit and keep pace with its two main German rivals.
