Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children.
Revelation 21:7 NIV
Revelation was written to encourage God’s people to remain faithful in the midst of a world that was antagonistic to faith. Life will not always be easy for those who follow Jesus as Lord. But the reward for remaining faithful is great. Because those who are victorious, who are faithful until the end, will have a part in the New Jerusalem, the bride of Christ. The second death, consignment to the lake of fire, will not touch those who are victorious.
The reward for being victorious was part of Jesus’ message to each of the seven churches in chapters two and three. The one who is victorious will . . .
- Eat from the tree of life (Rev. 2:7).
- Not be hurt by the second death (Rev. 2:11).
- Receive hidden manna and a new name (Rev. 2:17).
- Be given authority over the nations (Rev. 2:26).
- Be dressed in white (Rev. 3:5).
- Be part of the temple of God (Rev. 3:12).
- Sit with Christ on his throne (Rev. 3:21).
The full significance of some of these rewards is unclear, at least to me. But they all look to a future that is quite unlike our present condition. A glorious, eternal future with our Lord.
We are engaged in a spiritual battle (Eph. 6:10-18). So take up the armor God has provided, stand your ground, and emerge victoriously. And don’t let anything move you from the hope we have in Christ. Just remember all that is given to the one who is victorious.
