Who’s taking the 2026 compact car sales crown?
Many of the world’s major automakers have posted their June and first half sales, giving us an idea of how the market is shaping up in 2026. A sharp increase in hybrid sales is the dominant storyline, and few automakers know more about how to produce a good hybrid than Toyota and Honda. Both automakers sell hybrid versions of the Corolla and Civic, two nameplates synonymous with reliability and value in the sub-$30,000 category. But which legendary compact car is leading the sales war? We unpack the figures here.
Corolla Vs. Civic Sales: It Could Hardly Be Closer

Over the first half of 2026, just 1,037 units separate the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic. The Honda is ahead, but the Toyota has almost completely closed the gap this year. Here are their sales figures for 2026.
The sales figures above include sedan and hatchback models, along with all powertrain types and performance models. As you can see, the Civic has maintained its lead, but the Corolla is catching up. Last year this time, the Honda was ahead by 8,184 units, but a year later, its lead is just 1,037 cars.
Of all the Corollas sold in 2026, 23,731 have been hybrids, or roughly 18% of all models sold. It’s a different story for the Civic, with 33% of all models being hybrids (43,310 cars, to be exact). That’s an interesting differential, especially considering that the Civic Hybrid Sedan is $4,420 more expensive than the Corolla Hybrid Sedan.
What The Numbers Tell Us

In a year where motorists have been under pressure due to high gas prices, the demand for small, efficient sedans like these has increased. In that regard, the Civic and Corolla are still fulfilling the same role they did when they arrived on the scene many decades ago.
For now, the overall momentum has shifted to the Corolla, despite it being the older car here. This shift appears to be driven primarily by the non-hybrid Corolla, which makes up the majority of the sales mix. At $23,125, this sedan’s very attractive price is hard to ignore. If the current growth rate persists, the Corolla could outsell its great rival by the end of the year.

The Honda Civic is outperforming the Corolla in hybrid adoption, though, with roughly a third of all Civics being electrified. Despite the price premium, the Civic Hybrid’s positioning as a sportier option—it produces 200 horsepower to the Corolla Hybrid’s measly 138 hp—and not merely an economical sedan looks to be decisive. Given the price difference, Honda is very likely extracting more value per sale of its small hybrid sedan.
“At a time when affordability is more important than ever, the exceptional value offered by Honda and Acura is helping us retain customers and attract buyers from competing brands,” said Lance Woelfer, Vice President of Auto Sales, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “Our commitment to fuel efficiency is also resonating with consumers, with hybrid models accounting for about 30% of Honda sales as customers increasingly seek more efficient vehicle options.”

Small Sedans Still Have Their Place

Honda
The Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla remain the leaders in a small sedan/hatchback segment that has not lost its relevancy. Fashionable alternatives like the Kia K4 and Nissan Sentra have added a dash of flair to the category, but these cars are still defined by low prices and simple, reliable mechanicals.
The average marketed price of new vehicles hit a record $51,974 on June 30, and at roughly half that amount, these Japanese compacts are two of just a few viable options for many Americans wanting to purchase a new vehicle in 2026.
