Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell will speak Tuesday morning from the European Central Bank’s annual retreat in Portugal, as he faces heavy criticism from President Trump and the White House over his decision not to cut interest rates in recent months.
While he’s cited the volatility of markets following Trump’s tariff rollout and unrest in the Middle East for his choice, the president has continually threatened to remove him as Fed chief. Names of who could lead the nation’s central bank should Powell be dismissed have started to emerge, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
During the retreat Tuesday, Powell will be joined by economic leaders from the European Union, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom
The event is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. EDT.
