Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) mocked President Trump for the commander-in-chief’s claim that the governor privately told him that he’s the greatest president of his lifetime.
Trump spoke to reporters from the Oval Office on Monday, recalling his meeting with Moore at the Army-Navy football game in December that took place in Landover, Md., at FedEx Field, home to the Washington Commanders. He claimed that Moore hugged him and shook his hand and told him, “You’re the greatest president of my lifetime.”
Trump said he told Moore that it was nice of him to say that, and he wanted him to say it publicly but understood he couldn’t.
Moore quickly responded in a post on X on Monday, writing “lol” in response to a video of Trump speaking.
“Keep telling yourself that, Mr. President,” Moore commented on the post.
The governor’s rejection of Trump’s claim comes after he and the president attacked each other on Sunday as Trump considers sending National Guard troops into Baltimore, as he has done in Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles, Calif.
Moore said in a recent speech that Trump should “walk our streets and not just talk about us from the Oval Office.”
Trump fired back in a post on Truth Social on Sunday.
“I assume he is talking about out of control, crime ridden, Baltimore? As President, I would much prefer that he clean up this Crime disaster before I go there for a ‘walk,’” he wrote.
Trump slammed Baltimore over its crime rate and also threatened to reconsider providing federal funding to rebuild the Francis Scott Key Bridge that was badly damaged after a cargo ship ran into it last year.
Moore has pushed back on Trump’s claims about crime in the city, noting that murder rates have fallen to record lows while he’s been governor.
Trump and Moore also sparred over Moore’s service record and Moore accusing Trump of trying to distract from calls to release files related to Jeffrey Epstein.
