Ford has officially given its next affordable electric pickup a name – the Fathom. While the automaker has confirmed the truck’s name, pricing, technology and 2027 production plans, Ford has not yet revealed the production vehicle’s exterior design. That leaves plenty of room for speculation about what the new Ford Fathom could look like.
What We Know About The Ford Fathom
The Fathom will be Ford’s first vehicle built on its new Universal Electric Vehicle platform, a cost-focused architecture designed to make electric vehicles substantially more affordable. Ford says the truck will start at $28,350 before destination charges, putting it within striking distance of the company’s gasoline and hybrid-powered Maverick. The 2026 Ford Maverick starts at a higher $28,595, according to Ford’s current specifications.

In terms of proportions, the Fathom is expected to occupy roughly the same compact footprint as the Maverick, despite Ford referring to it as a midsize electric truck. That suggests a relatively short hood, upright cabin and practical pickup bed rather than the imposing dimensions of an F-150. Ford has also confirmed seating for five, a frunk and a large touchscreen, so the Fathom is being designed as a genuine everyday vehicle rather than a stripped-down electric work truck, which makes a clean, modern exterior particularly likely.
Design and Tech
A simple front fascia could replace the traditional grille, while slim LED headlights and a sculpted but relatively upright body would help distinguish the Fathom from the Maverick. A high beltline, short overhangs and substantial wheel arches would also give the truck the stance American buyers expect without pushing its size into traditional midsize-pickup territory.
The Fathom is expected to emphasize practicality. Ford has confirmed bidirectional power capability, meaning the truck could potentially supply electricity to external equipment, while every Fathom will be capable of supporting Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free highway driving system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will also be available.
When Will The Ford Fathom Reach Dealerships
Production is scheduled to begin at Ford’s Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky in 2027, with preorders expected to open early that year. Ford has yet to show the production exterior, so any rendering remains an interpretation rather than an official representation. Still, the ingredients point toward a compact electric pickup with modern styling, useful proportions and enough technology to make its sub-$30,000 starting price especially significant.
