Ford has recalled several of its largest vehicles in the U.S. as they could experience a loss of exterior lighting, leading to reduced visibility. Those models include the brand’s full-size Expedition SUV and F-Series Super Duty pickup trucks. So far, the automaker is aware of six warranty claims linked to the condition, but fortunately, there have been no related accidents. Inoperative headlights could put drivers of these Ford vehicles and other road users at risk in dark conditions, so here’s everything owners need to know.
Ford Lighting Recall Detailed

Ford
The new Ford recall has been published on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrative (NHTSA) website. Here’s a list of affected models:
- 2025-2027 Ford Expedition (13,298 units)
- 2026 Ford F-250 (17,512 units)
- 2026 Ford F-350 (10,295 units)
- 2026 Ford F-450 (523 units)
- 2026 Ford F-550 (120 units)
In total, 41,748 Ford vehicles are potentially affected by the condition.
According to the recall report, the headlight assemblies of these vehicles may contain a contaminated LED chip.
“LED chips in headlamp assemblies may have been exposed to contamination at the chip supplier’s manufacturing facility,” states the report.
This can cause the daytime running lights, parking lights, low beams, and high beams to become inoperative. In certain cases, the lights may work but drivers may notice diminished illumination. A dashboard indicator light will illuminate if the low and/or high beams stop working. Vehicles equipped with both LED reflector or LED projector headlights could experience the failure.
What Owners Should Do Now

Ford
Ford will mail remedy notification letters to owners between November 6, 2026, and November 13, 2026. As of October 26, 2026, owners’ VINs will become searchable on the NHTSA’s site, which can be used to confirm if a vehicle is part of the recall group or not.
Affected owners will need to take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer for an inspection. If the inspection fails, the headlamps will be replaced at no cost to vehicle owners. While no other advisory has been issued, owners should take care when driving at night, as they may experience failure of the headlights at any stage.

Another Recall, But Ford’s Quality Standards Are Improving

Ford
While the goal for any automaker is no recalls at all, Ford still leads the industry this year with 78 recalls. However, the automaker has made great strides in picking up quality issues early. It hired over 350 technical specialists, part of a strategy that saw Ford rank as the best mass-market brand in this year’s JD Power Initial Quality Study. Three years ago, Ford ranked 23rd.
“There was a recognition as we were struggling through our quality performance several years ago that something needed to change,” said Charles Poon, Ford’s vice president of vehicle hardware engineering, in an interview with Automotive News. “We were not effectively solving problems, and we were not effectively preventing problems. There’s been hundreds of corrections, improvements, I would say, in our designs even before the first part is even produced, going through this process. We’re starting to see the payoffs of that occur right now.”
While the Expedition/Super Duty lighting issue was not identified before production, Ford at least traced the root cause before an overwhelming number of vehicles were impacted.
