Hypercar refers to a vehicle that moves the performance and technological goalposts so far forward that it redefines its segment. Every generation or so, one machine earns that distinction above all others. The 1950s had the Mercedes 300SL, the 1960s brought the mid-engine Lamborghini Miura, and the 1980s crowned the Porsche 959. For the 1990s, most enthusiasts hand that honor to the McLaren F1 — and they’re not wrong. But they’re not entirely right, either.
