Kroger is looking to take over much of an abandoned 183,000-square-foot Dunwoody building formerly occupied by Walmart. The Atlanta Business Chronicle reports that the rezoning request indicates the grocer wants to put a 118,000-square-foot Kroger Marketplace in the vacant building at Perimeter Village. The remaining space would be leased to another tenant.
Dunwoody City Council would have to approve the plan, which could come up for a vote in June.
Kimco Realty acquired Perimeter Village in 2022. Current retail tenants include Carter’s, DSW, Hobby Lobby, and World Market.
The action reaffirms Kroger’s recent trend of opening larger-format stores at the expense of smaller, underperforming ones, a number of which have closed.
Kroger’s new store in Dunwoody would be across the road from a Publix Super Market that opened in 2022. An existing Kroger store is located a few miles to the east on Chamblee Dunwoody Road.
