Refining The Rollout
Tesla introduced several new features with the 2026.20 update in May 2026. As with many major software releases, those additions can require further refinement after reaching customers, as the company identifies bugs and opportunities to improve performance. Now, the latest 2026.20.6.1 update appears to continue that process.
According to Not a Tesla App, the 2026.20.6.1 update builds on the broader 2026.20 software branch, which introduced features such as Dashcam Clip Encryption, Parental Controls, and “Hey Grok.” The branch also expanded Blind Spot Warning While Parked to additional vehicles in mid-June 2026, after the feature initially debuted on the refreshed “Highland” Model 3 in 2024. The system prevents the doors from opening on the first button press if an approaching object is detected in the vehicle’s blind spot.

The Security Upgrade
Dashcam Clip Encryption protects recorded footage by encrypting videos stored on the vehicle’s USB drive, helping prevent unauthorized access if the drive is removed or lost. It is a welcome addition against the backdrop of the EV maker’s past privacy scrutiny, including a 2023 Reuters report alleging that some employees shared sensitive images and videos recorded by customers’ vehicle cameras.
The updated Parental Controls allow Tesla owners to block access to the Browser, Theater, and Arcade apps. Meanwhile, the “Hey Grok” feature lets owners launch and talk to the AI assistant by simply saying the phrase. However, the assistant is still in beta and is limited mainly to conversations and navigation-related changes. That puts it behind Rivian’s new AI assistant, which can control several vehicle functions, including HVAC and drive mode, through voice commands.
The report also touched on the Service Mode improvements, which include a new Forward Camera View Cleaning panel designed to support cleaning the windshield area in front of the cameras. The panel displays a live camera stream and allows users to zoom in on the feed. The feature is notable because camera visibility has already been a regulatory concern for Tesla’s driver-assistance systems, including an NHTSA investigation into FSD performance in reduced-visibility conditions such as sun glare, fog, and airborne dust.

Quiet But Meaningful
For owners already running the 2026.20 software, the latest release should deliver a more stable and polished experience, even if many of the changes are largely behind the scenes.
Aside from this new update, Tesla also recently started rolling out a version of its newer FSD software to older vehicles powered by the AI3 chip. Referred to as FSD V14 “Lite,” the update uses learnings from the AI4-based V14 system to improve driving behavior on older hardware. It also adds new parking-related features and refines how the system handles common driving scenarios.
