Mercedes-Benz once attempted to enter the luxury pickup market with the X-Class, essentially a badge-engineered Nissan Navara (the global version of America’s Frontier) with Mercedes styling. Sales fell short of expectations: about 16,700 units were sold in 2018 across Europe, Australia, and South Africa. In 2019, the number dropped to approximately 15,300. By May 2020, Mercedes confirmed it would end production of the X-Class – a definite mistake that its stark rival, BMW, has been steering away from.
